Mirena Side Effects

|

MirenaWomen around the country are reporting numerous, often debilitating healthcare problems after being implanted with Bayer’s popular Mirena intrauterine device (IUD). The vast majority of these women were totally unaware of Mirena’s ability to cause serious side effects such as uterine perforation, embedment of the device in the uterine wall, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) until after the implant was inserted and they became extremely sick. Many others are still suffering in silence, and have no idea that Mirena is to blame.

What is Mirena?

First approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000, the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) is currently implanted in more than two million women in the United States. Worldwide, more than 15 million women have used Mirena since it was first approved by the FDA. Mirena is designed to be inserted directly into the uterus within a week of the first day of menstruation, where it steadily releases a third-generation synthetic progestin known as levonorgestrel. And while it has demonstrated considerable effectiveness as a contraceptive device, Mirena has been increasingly linked to a large number of serious side effects in certain users.

Mirena Side Effects

According to the FDA, Mirena has been associated with the following serious health complications:

  • Perforation of the Uterine Wall
  • Perforation of the Cervix
  • Migration Outside the Uterus
  • Intestinal perforation
  • Expulsion of the Mirena IUD
  • Fertility problems
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Post-operative surgical complications following removal of Mirena
  • Abscess
  • Adhesions
  • Infection

If you suffered from any of these complications, required surgery, or have a loved one who died after being implanted with a Mirena IUD, you may have a potential Mirena side effects lawsuit.

Mirena Side Effects Litigation

Lawsuits alleging that the Mirena IUD caused uterine perforations and other serious injuries are beginning to mount in courthouses around the country, with a total of 16 cases filed so far in New Jersey Superior Court, Morris County. In anticipation of a flood of similar claims, Bayer has petitioned to have the lawsuits consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Middlesex County, New Jersey.

All of the claims involve similar allegations that Mirena caused plaintiffs to suffer severe, potentially permanent physical injuries and substantial pain and suffering. The lawsuits also contend that Bayer has a history of overstating the benefits of Mirena, and understating its potential adverse health complications. The complaints note that in 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising, and Communications ruled that claims made by Bayer’s ‘Simple Style Program,’ which marketed Mirena to busy moms, were unsubstantiated and failed to mention side effects such as weight gain, acne, and breast tenderness.
